Mingus’s music is as varied and passionate as his personality, running the gamut from joyous gospel and a multitude of blues all the way to quasi-classical suites, political commentaries, and tender tributes to his musical heroes. In this show, Cold Spring Jazz Quartet showcases the full range of Mingus’s work, punctuating the selections with humorous, informative stories about the man and his music. Any idea when this picture was taken? I’m thinking sometime in the 50s, since he’s young and skinny. Can’t seem to find out online.

Thanks for the comment! I think this is from 1959, around the time of the “Mingus Ah Um” sessions. There are quite a few photos of him wearing this shirt and hat from around the same time, and Priestley’s biography shows a similar photo, which he dates to 1959. Thanks again for your interest. –Mark
